Budhi Diwali is celebrated here a month after Diwali. In Giripar area of ​​Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh “Budhi Diwali” is celebrated as ‘Mashraali’.

Celebrations of Budhi Diwali बूढ़ी दिवाली

People living in these areas perform Budhi Diwali in their own traditional ways. They sing Parokadiya Geet, Virah Geet Bhayuri, Rasa, and also perform Naatiyan, Swang as well as Hudak dance. Naatiyan and Hudak are the traditional dance forms of Himachal Pradesh.

There is also a tradition of performing Badhechu dance on the festival of Budi Diwali, while in some villages, people of a community perform the Budiyat dance at midnight.

Why Budhi Diwali is celebrated?

A lot of snow falls in those areas where Budhi Diwali is celebrated. The temperature is always very low in minus. Due to this these areas cut from rest of the world and the communications stops.

It is believed that due to non-communication the news of Lord Rama’s returning to Ayodhya reached here around one month later. This is the reason why Budhi Diwali बूढ़ी दिवाली is celebrated after one month from the actual Diwali.
