Early Life of Carter G. Woodson
Woodson was born on 19 December, 1875 in Virginia. His mother was Anne Eliza (Riddle) who was the daughter of Henry and Susan Riddle. She was born into slavery on 10 July, 1843 in Virginia, United States.
Woodson’s mother Anne Eliza and her mother Susan Riddle were enslaved by Thomas Henry Hudgins. Thomas Henry Hudgins was a small farmer in Buckingham.
Woodson’s father was James Henry Woodson who was born in Virginia in 1840. Both the parents of Woodson were illiterate and helped the Union soldiers during the Civil War.
Woodson became the second African American to obtain P.HD from Harvard University after W.E.B. Du Bois.
