There is a tradition of celebrating Choti Diwali a day before Diwali. This festival is also known as Kali Chaudas, Narak Chaturdashi, and also Roop Chaudas.
When does Choti Diwali Come?
Diwali’s festival is not one day festival, it lasts for 5 days. Diwali begins with Dhanteras which is the first day and ends with Bhai Dooj. It falls on the next day of 14th day of Krishan Paksha of Kartik Maas which is Dhanteras.
Choti Diwali Mythological Story/legend
It is believed that on this day Shri Krishna killed Narakasura and freed 16,100 girls from captivity.
This festival is also known as “Roop Chaudas”. It is believed that on this day if someone wakes up before sunrise and applies ubatan(face and body) pack, the beauty is enhanced.

There is another belief that Hanuman Ji was born on Kartik Krishan Chaurdashi which is Choti Diwali, so it is also celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti. Hanuman Ji is worshipped and offered Gur, Channa as prasad on this day.
Choti Diwali Pooja Method
On Choti Diwali, Maa Laxmi is worshipped along with Lord Ganesha. If you have bought silver coins on Dhanteras, you need to place them on Choti Diwali in front of Laxmi ji. Take a plate of Brass and make a sign of Swastik on it. Place 11 diyas around it and a 5 faced diya in the center. You can offer Itra, Flowers, Roli, Sindoor etc. to Laxmi Ji and do preayers.

Home Decoration in Choti Diwali
Do not forget to lit your home with diyas on Choti Diwali. It is an old tradition to lit diyas even they are lesser in quantity then the main Diwali. You can make some special sweet dish or purchase sweets from market and offer to God as prasadam.
