Earthquake is the shaken of earth due to the movement of plates inside it. There have been instances in the past when it has caused havoc and massive human loss due to its heavy intensity. Recently what happened in India with epicenter in Nepal were also disastrous.
Earthquake is measured by it’s magnitude in the range of 1 to 10 in Richter scale. There have been many cases of its occurence in the past.
What is Earthquake?
Earthquake as defined above is the shaking of the surface of the earth. It is caused by seismic waves which are the result of sudden movement of plates under the earth and the release of energy in the Earth’s lithosphere.
Different Types of Earthquake
There are broadly three categories of Earthquakes based on the intensity and the depth of the tremor:
- Shallow Origin Earthquake– The earthquake whose depth value is at a depth of 0 to 50 km are called shallow types earthquakes. These earthquakes are relatively more destructive.
- Medium Origin Earthquakes – The earthquake whose origin is at a depth of 50 to 250 km are called Medium origin earthquakes.
- Deep Origin Earthquakes– The earthquake whose origin is up to a depth of 250-700 km
Common Causes of Earthquake
- Natural causes
Volcanic activity
Dispersion of gases
Tectonic plate movement - Anthropogenic causes
Mining of Fossil fuels and other
Mining of underground
Construction of dams
Underground nuclear test - Other factors
Meteor
Shower movement of the earth due to the rotation of the earth
Earthquake Prevention Measures
Some of the preventive measures from earthquake are:
- If you are in a lift in a building, then get down immediately, in such a situation, stairs are used to get down from the building.
- Shut off the electrical current in the house and remove all electronic items from the blinking electrical sockets.
- If you get trapped inside the house or building, then hide inside the table, post, desk kept in the house.
- Do not use lifts otherwise, you can get struck there due to electricity failure
- If you are driving a car, slow it down and park it on a safer side which is empty. Keep sitting in the car till you stop feeling the tremor.
