Lisa Calan recently was presented with the spirit of Cinema award in IFFK and is the first recipient of this IFFK’S Spirit of cinema award. Her own directed movie “Language of the Mountains” was also screened at IFFK.
Early Life of Lisa Calan
Lisa was born and brought up in Turkey. She was born in a Kurdish community and works as a Filmmaker, Editor, Actor, Screen Writer.
ISIS Attack Changed Lisa’s Life
Lisa was creating movies and busy in her life until one day she came across a life changing incident. The incident happened on June 5, 2015 just two days before the general elections in Turkey in a rally for the people’s democratic party in the city of Diyarbakir.
It was a bomb blast by ISIS!!
The severity of the blast could be understood in such a way that it had killed 5 people, and injured several people on the spot. Lisa Calan who was also present on the spot had got both her legs amputated after the bombing.
She got support from other women filmmakers in Turkey. They started campaigns to raise money for the bomb attack victims. The slogan of the campaign was kept “Let’s be arms and legs to each other“.
Dr. Munjed Al Muderis Operated Lisa Calon
Lisa had to gone through around nine painful surgeries in Turkey and Germany but her legs could not be healed. Famous renowned Australian orthopedic surgeon Dr. Munjed Al Muder added Titanium implants in Lisa’s legs at a hospital in Australia. Dr. Munjed serves the patients on priority who have been the victims of war or such attacks. Please know about this renowned doctor in another article.
Lisa Calon’s Legal Fight with Turkey Government
Turkey government had agreed to pay 1.6 million to Lisa as compensation but she refused saying that this amount would not even cover the cost of her treatment. She filled a lawsuit against the government and the case is still going on.

- Lisa Calon has edited a short movie “The Voice of the Street”
- Lisa also co-directed a film “Nisaibin’s Color”
- Lisa is the first recipient of the IFFK’s Spirit of Cinema award held in Kerala in the year 2022
