Khetri is an earthen container or pot in which sand is poured. This is followed by sowing jau or barley seeds into it. A little or no water is needed daily for 9 days so that the seeds can be germinated. Description of Jau (Barley) is mentioned in mythological stories and is related with the formation of universe.

It is believed that when the universe was formed, it was jau which was the first crop. This is why jau is also known as the “full crop”. This is why we offer to god the very first crop which is jau during hawans or pooja.
